In today’s global marketplace, most large-scale enterprises have widely-dispersed w manufacturing and commercial operations that are connected by a communications net ork. The enterprise communication networks of the future are expected to be hetero, fi geneous in several dimensions: mixed-media physical transmission facilities (e.g. copper ber-optic, satellite); multi-media information transmission (e.g. video, voice, data); multi, l ple vendor sub-networks; and varied performance objectives (e.g. high throughput for data ow blocking probability for voice). As a result of this multi-faceted heterogeneity, future , a enterprise networks are expected to be highly complex in their transmission, performance nd communication characteristics. Due to this complexity, and due to the disparity p among management systems for individual subnetworks, efficient management of enter rise networks is an extremely challenging problem.
